Studies on Balinese Festive Decoration
These paintings deal with "Umbul Umbul", a flag-like, typical Balinese ornament that can be found all over the island and has a long tradition.

Umbul Umbul are long bamboo poles, which leak thinly upwards and describe a long half-arc on the whole, which is supposed to symbolize the crescent moon. On such a huge "flagpole" blows a long, narrow fabric, which runs off to the top pointed following the semicircle. Only 100 years ago, these panels were hand-painted with stories from everyday life and mythology. Today it is usually monochrome or black and white checkered cloths.

BALI - UMBUL UMBUL HIJAU
BALI – UMBUL UMBUL HIJAU

For the most important celebrations, the long bamboo poles are erected in front of the dwellings along all the streets and, depending on the island region, they are decorated with strips of palm leaves or rice ears. At about 1.20m altitude there is a small sacrificial altar. These are then called "Penjor".
