Two Sound Installations: TEST PHASE and TSCHAIKOWSKY DIED IN THE BATHROOM prove, that German Art Artist Iz Maglow examines even the subject "Music" under most various aspects and with transforms it with very different and unusual techniques. "...If there exists something like jokes in Fine Arts, then he was successful with his object TSCHAIKOWSKY DIED IN THE BATHROOM. ..." wrote Dr. Ulrich Köppen in Böblinger Bote in 1984 on occasion of an exhibition of Iz Maglow in Leonberger Kunstverein Glaskasten. And Dr. Köppen continued: "...On the floor ... there are two tape recorder; one contains the Sixth Symphony of the Russian composer, the other one modern bathroom sounds, like water in all kinds of usage, electric shaver and teeth brushing. At the wall above are hanging ten blue painted bathroom utilities: a tub, a board with a beaker, a shower, a phone receiver, a neon lamp, a drainpipe, an electric shaver, a faucet, a toilet seat and an extension cord. All details are arranged in a way, that they represent the Numbers 0 to 9; besides this, each of them contains a little speaker inside. With a ... self made sound mixer either the bathroom sounds or the music can be send to each speaker - or to all at the same time. The historical fact, that Tschaikowsky died in a bathroom, is alienated in an ironical
manner into a Music-Sound-Object, that for sure some people may see as a 'desecration', but in
its practical operation it represents more irony and humour as cheap mockery..." |
